Indian Express के एडिटोरीयल कॉलम में G N DEVY जो कि एक कल्चर ऐक्टिविस्ट है अपने लेख के चलते विवादों मे आ गए है आइये हम भी देखे कि उन्होंने क्या लिखा-
“अकबर जगतगुरु हैं क्योंकि उन्होंने सभी धर्मों के लिए समभाव रखा था और जहांगीर से ले कर शाहजहाँ तक ने जज़िया कर नहीं लगाया हिंदुओं पर. उन्होंने हिंदुओं को आज़ादी दी थी कि वो अपनी मर्ज़ी से अपना धर्म मान सके!“
ये लाइन उन्होंने शिवाजी महाराज पर लिखी एक किताब Who Was Shivaji? by Govind Pansare का ज़िक्र करते हुए लिखा है. उनका कहना है कि शिवाजी महाराज ने औरंगज़ेब को जज़िया कर के प्रति अपनी नाराज़गी ज़ाहिर करते हुए कहा था. आर्टिकल में ये बात देखिए ऐसे कही गयी
है,
“The government of the Empire is running its daily administration by collecting jizya from Hindus. In fact, formerly, Emperor Akbar ruled with great equanimity. Therefore, apart from the Daudis and Mohammedis, the religious practices of Hindus such as Brahmins and Shevades (Shaivaites) were protected. The Emperor helped these religions. Therefore, he was hailed as a jagatguru.” The letter goes on to say that Jahangir and Shah Jahan too allowed the undisturbed practice of all religions: “Those Emperors always had their eyes fixed on people’s welfare.”
जिनके इस कॉलम पर नाराज होते हुए प्रतियोगी छात्रों ने कड़ी निंदा की और उन्हे भारत की हिस्ट्री फिर से पढ़ने का आश्वाशन दिया, उनके मुताबिक मुगल शासक को की हक नही कि वो भारत के ही नागरिको को उनके अधिकार से वंचित करके टैक्स लगाते।
